Providence
is a Baptist Church, where people have been meeting
since 1842. We are a small congregation who meet together at the chapel
in Park Lane every Sunday and most Friday evenings, following the
example left on record in the Bible of the first Christian Churches.
We are 'Strict and Particular' Baptists. This means that we
practise restricted communion, that is, anyone wishing to
receive the communion has to be a baptised believer. Also, we believe
that Jesus Christ came into this world to save a particular
people, who alone shall share this blessing.
The authority for our message and our worship is the Bible.
Believing the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, we seek to be
governed by it in all we do. The Bible version is the 'Authorised' or
'King James' Authorised Version (AV). We believe the AV to be the most
accurate and literal translation.
We believe that the Bible provides the only message of
reconciliation between God and man.
We therefore preach Jesus Christ as the only Saviour.
The Bible says "God commandeth all men everywhere
to repent." We
believe all who do and are brought to know Jesus Christ shall live with
him in heaven at last.
Our delight is to praise the living God who has revealed
Himself in the Bible.
It is a joy to have others join with us to worship God.
Our services usually conform to the following format:
- Opening Prayer
- Hymn
- Bible Reading
- Hymn (Sunday services only)
- Prayer
- Hymn
- Sermon
- Hymn
- Closing Benediction
The hymns we sing are either taken from Gadsby's Collection,
Hymns for Worship or Young People's Hymnal. We
have an organ in the Chapel, to lead the singing of the hymns.
While we are an old-established nonconformist church we are concerned
to preach a message which is relevant to the modern world.
We practice Believer’s Baptism by immersion. We believe that
baptism should be administered only to those who have come to a
personal faith in Jesus Christ and acknowledge this in baptism.
We long to share with you all this Good News that “Christ
Jesus came into the world to save sinners” so we
welcome you to come to our services. Our prayer to God is that He will
send a true revival that our Chapel may be filled with people who shall
“Worship God in Spirit and in Truth”.
Hoping to see you,
David Green, Deacon.
